WGC March Meeting OPEN Meeting Town Hall, 3 N. Lowell St, 7:00 PM
Insects such as bees and butterflies play a crucial role in pollinating many of our food crops, including apples, berries, and vegetables. However, recent years have seen a worrying decline in the populations of these essential wild pollinators. To address this issue, Donna Miller will be presenting “Growing a Pollinator Garden,” an event hosted by the Windham Garden Club.
The presentation will cover how planting patches of flowers, wildflowers, grasses, shrubs, and flowering trees, with a focus on native plants, can encourage and support natural pollinators while also enhancing backyard landscapes. Attendees will receive recommendations for creating a pollinator habitat in their own yards.
Donna Miller, passionate about plants and gardening since childhood, currently grows and sells cut flowers with her husband Jim at their Canterbury, NH farm, Petals in the Pines. She became a Master Gardener in 2010 and an Advanced Master Gardener specializing in pollinators in 2021.
At Petals in the Pines, Donna and her husband have established two meadows by initially retiring their lawnmower. Each year, they plant additional native species to create a welcoming environment for pollinators. The farm is certified as a Monarch Way Station with Monarch Watch and a Xerces Society certified pollinator habitat. It is also listed with Homegrown National Park, all of which support efforts to protect pollinators and native plants.
The Windham Garden Club’s meeting and presentation will be held on Thursday, March 20th, at 7:00 PM at the Windham Town Hall. This open meeting invites all to attend. Refreshments will be served, followed by a short business meeting and Donna’s presentation. For more information or questions, contact info@windhamgardenclub.org.
